The game got away from Gerrit Cole in the fifth in a 5-3 Opening Day loss in Boston Monday.

Everything was working for Cole early. He was one over the minimum through four innings, his pitch count sat at 50 and when he needed it, his infield was hoovering baseballs.

The Pittsburgh Pirates ended the 2016 season falling short of the postseason and the higher expectations that recent success had created for the organization. With a record of 78-83 last year, the Pirates were 25 games behind the World Series Champion Chicago Cubs.

If the Pirates hope to make a run in 2017 they will have to get better production from stars Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole. Here’s a quick look at the 2017 Pirates squad.

Two seasons ago, the National League Central was the best division in baseball. Three teams in the division (Cardinals, Pirates, Cubs) had the three best records in the league. Last season was a different story. The Cubs dominated the division.

The Cards just missed the playoffs, while the Bucs underachieved, going under .500 for the first time in three seasons.
